A quick run down on the Sakara Menu

After having the pleasure of interviewing Claire, i then had the pleasure of enjoying her food. I would call myself quite the foodie, and i am always up for trying something new, and that is exactly what the Sakara offers. Sakara offers a selection of Tappa’s, and it is suggested to get about two or three per person. Below, i have listed the menu for you to have a look at and get a feel for, i have also listed everything that i tried when i visited! The food was delicious and nothing i have tried before! The Sakara offers great food, great ambience and a over all great experience!

The return of Kinseys

You’ve heard it right, the return of kinsey’s is coming to Aigburth. However, the bakers will be under different management and a different name.

Kinsey’s in 2009.

Kinsey’s was originally opened in the early 1960’s by two sisters; the bakery out lived many other businesses right up and down Aigburth road. I as a child used to visit Kinsey’s (on the daily in fact; I was a big fan of their ‘yum yums’) I remember the old yellow panelling from the walls and the ground, the warn-down varnished wooden counter and the two little old ladies who would be there every day without fail. As soon as you walked into the bakery, you was immediately welcomed with a friendly face. I can still smell the burnt sausage rolls that would be specifically put to the side for me.

I can say confidently that the whole of Aigburth was heart broken when Kinsey’s closed for business in the summer of 2009. Following the closure of our treasured bakery, many other businesses have tried to be successful in its place. The retail spot has been a chicken shop, a hair dresses and a chip shop. All of them have come and gone; nothing like the 49 years that Kinsey’s was open for business.

So, bringing us to present day- a rumour was floating around about how Kinsey’s could be reopening. It’s true. I have had this rumour confirmed by Steve Burn (retired FireFighter, 53). The father of three daughters who have decided to do a grand re-opening of the Bakery. The three daughters, Emma (25), Jane (30) and Lindsey (32) have bought the property and are currently in the process of giving it a re-vamp and have not yet decided on a name.

Now, not everything will be the same as before. I don’t think any other bakers could recreate the magic that happened inside Kindey’s. The sisters have said that they want the a very simple vibe inside, very like how it was before. The stoves and ovens will be restored, giving their customers fresh breads and pastries daily. The major thing that will be different is that most things will be vegan. So I guess that means no burnt sausage rolls, however after speaking to a few members of our community I don’t think that will really matter.

“I’m so happy that the bakery is re-opening! I remember visiting when I was a child and visiting with my own children!”

John Phane 64

“We haven’t had anything similar to Kinsey’s since it shut, there is nothing like having some freshly made bread in the morning. i’m so happy another bakery will be in Aigburth again.”

Suesan Kennedy 58

“ I think it’s so lovely that Kinsey’s is re-opening, and I love the fact that they are keeping it as a family business.”

Connor Mccarthy 25

“Everyone was heart broken when the bakery closed, my wife stopped eating bread because she insisted no other bread tastes as good as the Kinsey sisters’ bread!”

Tina O’brien

The bakery will be opening later this winter, they will be proving a whole new healthy menu but promised to be keeping some of the recipes that Kinsey’s was famous for.  So, what do you think about the re-opening? Are you excited or do you think it will never be as good as it was before? Let us know down on the contact me page!

Sakara; Aigburths favourite place to eat.

Sakara; Aigburths favourite place to eat.

The restaurant Sakara has been a huge part of our community for the last 14 years. Other local businesses have come and gone, but Claire and her little bit of Egyptian Delicacy has stayed put. So, Today I had the pleasure of Interviewing Claire, and asking her how she’s happened to stay afloat all these years.

Before we dive in, what is the Sakara? If you haven’t heard of this restaurant i don’t know where you have been. It’s located just on Aigburth road and the corner of Mersey road. The restaurant/ Bar specialises in Egyptian Cuisine with a twist.

Taken inside the restaurant.

Can you tell me a bit about your business? When did it start up? Where did it all begin?

“originally I worked in a boring admin 9-5 job, I absolutely hated it! So for a change, I then worked as a waitress down in Aigburth vale and that’s where I found my passion for the hospitality profession! I then left the UK and moved to Spain for two years, just working in different bars and restaurants while travelling round. When I returned home, me and my partner at the time decided to invest in setting up our own business.”

spoken by Claire.

Why the name Sakara?

“My dad was Originally from Egypt, and we used to visit a little area called the Sakara all the time!”

How do you deal with competition?

“I think because my clientele are mostly locals, they’ll always stay loyal to my business. The bar is a place where you can just come and chill and have a few drinks, it’s a place to connect with the community around us and I know my customers know that! Also, not many places seem to thrive like my business, so if anything, if people go for a drink round the corner, they pop into ours after, so it brings in more customers if anything!”

Why Aigburth? Couldn’t you have thrived else where?

“I thought there was a gap in the market here, I also live here. I wanted it to be a place to come and relax, not so busy! Aigburth just was the perfect fit!”

Have you faced any problems?

“in terms of the business, no but I did get broken into last year. It was scary. After that I did take some time away from the Restaurant. It just really hurt me, that I had put so much energy, time and money into something I love, and people tried to take it away from me.”

How did you come back from the robbery?

“It took some time. The police where fabulous with helping! I was really scared for a while afterwards, but they caught the men that did it and they received 14 years! The community were really understanding too.”

Claire is an amazing business woman who is focused, driven and ambitious. She has set up this little her business from the ground, in a area which has rejected other hospitality businesses. She has got to know our community and brought us all a little closer together. I had the pleasure of interviewing this young entrepreneur and I do think she is a inspiration to all young woman, (like myself) who have ambitions of setting up their own business.

30 YEARS SINCE THE TRAGEDY OF HILLSBOROUGH;

City pays it’s respects with a silence for the 96 who lost their lives.

Liverpool stadium pay tribute to their lost fans on the 15th of April.

Today, marked the 30-year mile stone from the devastating tragedy of Hillsborough. On the 15TH of April, hundreds of people gathered outside of Liverpool’s St George’s hall to commemorate those who lost their lives.

On the football ground in 1989, thousands of fans gathered for the FA Cup semi-final football game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Hillsborough stadium, and 96 of those fans didn’t return home. The youngest of those fans was Jon-Paul Gilhooney aged 10, who was Liverpool FC’s Captain Steven Gerard’s cousin.

The city came together with open arms and heavy hearts, to show respect and share love with the 96 and the families who lost their love ones. The city gathered at 2:30pm and a brief service was held. Not many words where spoken, but you could feel the warmth, love and sadness in the air as people gave their tributes. At 3:06pm, those who gathered had a minute’s silence- the time that the football match was stopped. The Bells on Liverpool’s town hall rang 96 times, each for the men, women and children who lost their lives in 1996. The whole city stood still, and mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said a few words and lay down a beautiful display of flowers.

Today marked a day of love, remembrance and reflection. The heart of Liverpool will always hold those 96 people close. The 96 are always watching over our city and will never walk alone in Liverpool. It was a beautiful thing to witness so many people to come together with so much love and respect for what our city has lost.

Looking through the crowd of hundreds, people held pictures, Liverpool scarfs and tributes that where spelled people’s names on -many of these had ‘SON’ ‘FATHER’ ‘GRANDFATHER’ and ‘DAUGHTER’ written on them.

People have been grieving and giving tributes since the weekend of the tragedy. The stillness, love and sadness that filled the air all those years ago, was still here today years on. The Hillsborough monument is based in the centre of Liverpool city just by St Johns gardens, streams of people gathered throughout the day. I looked at all the names engraved into the monument, and thought how special it is that their names will stand forever, engraved into in the heart of our city.

Even though hundreds gathered to mourn and celebrate in the memory of those who lost their lives, LFC football team showed their respects by laying wreaths down at the memorial of Hillsborough at Anfield stadium. while other team’s took to social media to send thoughts and tributes to the families.
